Project: Sewage Pond

Transforming Wastewater Management with USV Technology

Background

Managing the sludge levels in sewage treatment ponds is essential for keeping wastewater systems efficient and compliant with environmental regulations. Without accurate data on sludge buildup, councils face reduced treatment efficiency, potential environmental contamination, and expensive maintenance surprises.

That’s exactly why Waimakariri District Council turned to Fox and Associates for support. After attending our Remote Sensing seminar, they wanted a better way to monitor sludge buildup in their Rangiora and Waikuku treatment ponds. They engaged us to conduct a bathymetric survey to gather precise data on the sludge depths and volumes.

Bringing a Better Approach

Previously, the Waimakariri District Council had relied on manual sludge depth measurements from another provider. But this method had major shortcomings:

  • Limited data – Only a few scattered points were measured, lacking full spatial coverage.
  • Poor comparisons – Without detailed mapping, it was hard to assess sludge buildup against design parameters or remaining capacity.
  • No historical records – The council had no as-built data on the ponds’ original ground levels or infrastructure.

They needed a solution that was safer, more efficient, and rich in actionable geospatial data.

The Challenges: Why Traditional Methods Fell Short

Gathering accurate sludge level data wasn’t easy. The Waimakariri District Council faced several challenges:

  • Limited resources & budget constraints – Traditional sludge monitoring methods were costly and inefficient, making frequent surveys impractical.
  • Lack of specialised equipment & expertise – Sludge monitoring requires advanced sonar equipment and trained personnel to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Operational constraints – The ponds operate continuously, so surveying had to be done without disrupting wastewater treatment.
  • Health & safety risks – Entering sewage ponds poses serious risks, including exposure to hazardous pathogens and chemicals.
  • Regulatory compliance – The Waimakariri District Council needed reliable data to meet evolving environmental regulations and avoid potential fines or legal issues.

Given these challenges, we needed to deliver a safe, cost-effective, and data-rich solution that would serve as a baseline dataset for ongoing pond management.

The Solution: Cutting-Edge Bathymetric Surveying

We brought in our Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), equipped with single-beam sonar to conduct a high-precision bathymetric survey.

This game-changing approach offered:

  • Enhanced safety – Operators could conduct the survey remotely without entering hazardous water.
  • Greater efficiency – Faster data collection meant less downtime for council operations.
  • High-quality, accurate data – The USV’s steady movement and precise sonar ensured comprehensive coverage of the pond.
  • Minimal environmental impact – The small, lightweight USV minimized disturbance to the water and sludge layers.

To go even further, we complemented the bathymetric survey with aerial UAV surveying, capturing high-resolution imagery and LiDAR data for a complete picture of the ponds.

The Results

Our bathymetric survey gave the Waimakariri District Council accurate, detailed sludge depth data for both the Rangiora and Waikuku ponds.

The impact was immediate:

  • Improved pond management – The council now has a baseline dataset to track sludge buildup and schedule maintenance proactively.
  • Better decision-making – Spatial data revealed sludge accumulation patterns, including an unexpected buildup in the first flush pond, leading to improved circulation strategies.
  • Cost-effective, safe data collection – Our USV-based approach delivered higher-quality data at a lower cost and with zero human exposure risks.
  • Regulatory confidence – The Waimakariri District Council can now make evidence-based decisions to meet environmental standards and avoid compliance issues.

Setting a New Standard for NZ Councils

This project represents a major step forward in wastewater management for New Zealand councils. By adopting USV technology, Waimakariri District Council has:

  • Boosted operational efficiency with a faster, safer, and more accurate survey method.
  • Reduced long-term costs through smarter, data-driven pond management.
  • Set a best-practice benchmark for other councils facing similar challenges.

With few providers offering this level of expertise, Fox and Associates is leading the way in advanced bathymetric surveying for wastewater management.
